For me, this includes volunteering.
One of my favorite ways to volunteer with Camilla and Jasper is through Beach Cleanups! Most recently, we joined Surfrider Foundation Vancouver in cleaning Wreck Beach in Vancouver on Earth Day (April 22). Surfrider Foundation is a global environmental nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of oceans and beaches.
Wreck Beach allows dogs on the beach certain times of the year, so Camilla and Jasper were able to roam the beach and supervise the trash pickup. Camilla in particular had a lovely time swimming after the ducks and chewing on some driftwood.
Volunteering with an organization, such as Surfrider, is a great way to do some community service, spend time with your dog, and meet some new people. I have yet to meet someone at a volunteer event who wasn’t happy to have some four legged assistance.
Even if you don’t have an organization like Surfrider in your area, beach cleanups (or park cleanups etc.) are relatively easy to organize and resources are often available for cleanup events. The City of Vancouver program Keep Vancouver Spectacular, for example, will drop off and pick up all required cleanup tools including trash bags and pickers.
Pro-tip: Organize a beach cleanup with your coworkers! Who doesn’t want to spend a weekday afternoon at the beach!?
